The Pioneering Kitplane
Building on the experience gained from the BD-1 and BD-2, American engineer Jim Bede designed a new light aircraft for amateur aviation: the BD-4. It became the world’s first true “kitplane,” making aircraft construction accessible to enthusiasts. The BD-4 was designed as a two- or four-seater high-wing aircraft, powered by an engine ranging from 100 to 150 horsepower.
This versatile aircraft could be equipped with either a conventional tailwheel landing gear or a tricycle landing gear configuration. Before its release, Jim Bede authored and published a 165-page book titled “Build Your Own Airplane,” providing assembly techniques easily understood even by novice aircraft builders.
From Design to Production
The first BD-4 prototype, registered N624BD, was publicly showcased at the EAA Airshow in 1968. Following its successful debut, the BD-4 entered serial production as kits, making it widely available. These kits were priced between $2,850 and $5,100, excluding the engine, offering an affordable path for amateur builders to own an aircraft.
Continuing Innovation
The BD-4 underwent significant modernization in 2007 with the installation of a new all-metal wing. This four-seat modification was designated the BD-4B. Additionally, the BD-4C model was released, featuring a new cockpit and a more powerful 300-horsepower engine. A new version, the BD-4LSA, was planned for release in 2009, featuring a Lycoming 0-233 engine, a fully glazed cockpit, modernized landing gear, and a new metal wing.
