The BICh-9 Gnom Glider: An Innovative Design

The BICh-9 Gnom was a conventional glider that, in some respects, mirrored its earlier predecessors, the AVF-12 of 1924 and the BICh-6 of 1927. Its distinctive small size earned it the name “Gnom” (Gnome). Constructed in 1929 with funds from the Moscow Osoaviakhim, this glider was intended to be a record-breaking sailplane.

Competition Trials and Performance

Between October 6 and 11, 1929, the aircraft was showcased at the 6th Glider Competitions in Koktebel. Pilot V.A. Stepanchonok completed three flights, totaling 17 minutes, and reached a maximum altitude of 100 meters. During these trials, issues such as unsuccessful center of gravity and insufficient aileron effectiveness were noted. It was asserted that, after rectifying these shortcomings, the “Gnom” would achieve favorable results.

A Unique Camouflage Scheme

It is worth mentioning the “Gnom” glider’s original paint scheme, featuring small, irregularly shaped polygons reminiscent of German World War I camouflage. The BICh-7 aircraft also sported a similar painting style. Unfortunately, the author lacks additional details regarding this distinctive “painting” episode.
