The Birth of the Bocono I
The Bocono I holds the distinction of being the first aircraft designed and built in Venezuela. This light monoplane was developed by technician Vicente Zambrano, marking a significant milestone in Venezuelan aviation history. It was a single-seater, low-wing aircraft, powered by a 36 hp Volkswagen VW 1.3 engine.
Zambrano himself overhauled and modified the engine, incorporating new bearings and replacing the ignition system to enhance its performance. His dedication and vision laid the groundwork for aircraft manufacturing in the country.
Development and First Flight
Construction of the Bocono I began in 1962. During its development, Zambrano encountered numerous challenges, which prolonged the build process. Ultimately, the aircraft made its maiden flight on December 8, 1965, a historic day for Venezuelan aeronautical engineering.
After several flights and a few minor incidents, the aircraft was transferred to the Aviation Museum in Maracay by the end of 1966. This move aimed to preserve the machine as a testament to local ingenuity.
Legacy and Final Destination
Regrettably, the Bocono I has not been preserved to the present day. The museum’s management made the decision to dismantle it and remove it from exhibition, a fate that has prevented future generations from appreciating it firsthand.
In addition to the Bocono I, Vicente Zambrano also designed and began construction of a helicopter named “Simón Bolívar,” in honor of the national hero, but he was unable to complete it. His legacy, nonetheless, endures as a pioneer of Venezuelan aviation.
