Development and Design
The Br.1001 Taon was a light strike fighter developed by the French company Breguet. Responding to a NATO technical specification for a light strike fighter, Breguet designed a mid-wing aircraft with swept wings and tail. It featured a retractable tricycle landing gear, enabling operations from unprepared runways.
The fuselage was engineered following the area rule principle, accommodating a closed pilot’s cockpit in the forward section and powered by a Bristol Orpheus BOr.3 turbojet engine. Breguet’s design secured an order for three prototypes in the competition, with the first taking flight on July 26, 1957.
Record-Breaking Performance
The second prototype showcased minor aerodynamic enhancements and a slightly extended fuselage. To boost its speed capabilities, aerodynamic strakes were integrated into the wing roots and fuselage, doubling as additional fuel tanks. In this enhanced configuration, the Br.1001 Taon (meaning “gadfly”) achieved a world record on April 25, 1958, for a 1000 km closed circuit, reaching 1046.65 km/h at 7620 m altitude.
The Taon further distinguished itself on July 23, surpassing its own record by achieving a speed of 1075 km/h. Plans for unbuilt serial Taon aircraft included implementing the area rule in the fuselage and incorporating a Bristol Orpheus BOr.12 turbojet engine with an afterburning thrust of 3706 kgf.
Future Variants and Plans
A proposed interceptor fighter variant was also considered, equipped with missiles onboard. These future iterations aimed to capitalize on the Taon’s advanced design principles and impressive performance.
