The development of the Chinese medium-range anti-ship missile C-601 (Yingji-6 or YJ-6) began in the mid-1960s. By the early 1980s, the missile was fully prepared, with its initial launches successfully conducted in 1984.
Origins and Design
The C-601 was developed based on the existing HY-2 (C-201) coastal anti-ship missile. It is designed for deployment on the H-6D maritime reconnaissance and anti-ship aircraft, with one missile mounted under each wing for operational missions.
Operational Capabilities
After launch, the missile follows a pre-programmed flight path, only engaging an active radar seeker with robust anti-jamming capabilities for target acquisition during its terminal phase. The C-601 can operate at various altitudes, specifically 50, 70, or 500 meters, to approach its target.
Its warhead possesses sufficient power to inflict severe damage on cruiser-class vessels exceeding 3,000 tons displacement, or transport ships larger than 10,000 tons.
Advanced Modifications
In the late 1980s, an enhanced variant known as the YJ-61 (C-611) was introduced. This improved modification featured a more powerful engine, extending its maximum effective range to up to 200 km.
