Loening C-2 Air Yacht

Posted on June 20, 2026 By

The success of COA and OL aircraft in the US Army and Navy prompted the “Loening” company to develop their civilian passenger version. In 1928, the first aircraft in this family, named Loening C-2 Air Yacht, was released.

Variants and Specifications

There were two variants of the aircraft: the Air Yacht C-2H (13 units built, plus one converted from a C-2C) and the Air Yacht C-2C (23 units built). These models were powered by Pratt & Whitney Hornet and Wright Cyclone engines, respectively.

Two C-2H units were purchased by the US Navy as ambulance aircraft, designated XHL-1.

Pioneering Flights and Commercial Use

In 1935, pilot Thor Solberg, flying a C-2C (converted from an OL), completed the first flight from New York to Bergen, Norway.

In 1930, two C-2H aircraft were used by Air Ferries for passenger transport between Oakland and San Francisco. This significantly reduced travel time compared to the ferry, cutting it from 40 to just 6 minutes.
