Porterfield CP-50 Collegiate

Posted on June 6, 2026 By

In 1936, the Porterfield Aircraft Corporation introduced an aircraft lighter than the Flyabout, named the Porterfield Zephyr, later renamed Porterfield CP-40. This aircraft was generally similar to its predecessor but featured a new tail assembly and a 40 hp (30 kW) engine. Its initial capabilities, however, proved somewhat limited.

The restricted capabilities of this new model, coupled with a growing demand for advanced training aircraft, prompted developers to focus on creating an improved version. This led to the development of the CP-50 Collegiate, powered by a 50 hp Continental A50-4 engine. This model aimed to fulfill the increasing need for effective trainers.

Evolution and Design

The Porterfield CP-50 Collegiate was designed as a more capable training platform. It built upon the foundational design of the Zephyr but incorporated enhancements crucial for its role. The emphasis was placed on creating a robust and reliable aircraft suitable for pilot instruction.

Variants and Production Legacy

Approximately 400 units of the Collegiate model were produced in various modifications, each featuring different engine configurations. These included the CP-55, which introduced a modified engine cowling, and the CP-65, equipped with a 65 hp Continental A65-8/-9 engine. Other notable variants were the FP-60 (Franklin 4AC-171-A1, 60 hp), FP-65 (Franklin 4AC-176-B29, 65 hp), LP-50 (Avco Lycoming O-145-A1, 50 hp), LP-55 (O-145-A3, 55 hp), and LP-65 (O-145-B1/B2, 65 hp).

Production of the Porterfield Collegiate series concluded in 1941. Despite its relatively short production run, its various iterations played a significant role in pilot training during a pivotal era in aviation history. The Collegiate remains a notable example of American light aircraft development.
