Development for the French Navy
The Bernard H-110 floatplane fighter was specifically built for a competition held by the French Navy. This contest sought a light float fighter capable of operating from both ships and shore bases. The H-110 was a variant of the Bernard H-52 fighter.
It was equipped with a more powerful Hispano-Suiza 9Vbs engine, delivering 710 horsepower. In addition to the new engine, the aircraft also received wings with an increased span.
Performance and Competition Outcome
Despite these upgrades, the Bernard H-110 was practically no different from its predecessor in other aspects, not even in its maximum flight speed. This lack of a significant performance advantage was the main reason for its failure in the competition.
The competition was ultimately won by the Loire 210 fighter. Following this setback, the Société des Avions Bernard company itself went bankrupt shortly thereafter.
