Early Life and Military Beginnings
Born in 1919 in the village of Zhelannoe Pervoe, Maryinsky district, Nikolai Vasilyevich Buryak was a Ukrainian national. He became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1943. His early education included attending secondary school and a factory-plant vocational school, after which he worked at the locomotive depot of the Krasnogorov Refractory Plant.
Buryak joined the Soviet Army in 1937 and successfully graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Pilot School in 1940. His distinguished service on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War began in 1942, encompassing critical campaigns in the Crimean, Southern, North Caucasian, Transcaucasian, Voronezh, Steppe, and 2nd Ukrainian fronts.
Hero of the Soviet Union
Throughout his active service, Senior Lieutenant Buryak demonstrated exceptional bravery and skill. He flew an impressive 395 combat sorties and engaged in 104 aerial battles, proving himself a formidable fighter pilot. His extraordinary valor was recognized on February 4, 1944, when, by a Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, he was awarded the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
At the time of this honor, he was serving as the commander of an aviation squadron within the 247th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 203rd Fighter Aviation Division. His decorations also include three Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals, underscoring his extensive contributions to the war effort.
Post-War Service and Legacy
Buryak’s final, 104th aerial battle occurred during the intense Berlin operation, where he successfully shot down his seventeenth enemy aircraft. Remarkably, his 395th and last combat sortie took place after Victory Day, in the skies over Czechoslovakia, marking the conclusion of his active flying career in the war.
He continued his service with the Armed Forces until 1960, retiring with the rank of Colonel. Nikolai Vasilyevich Buryak passed away on December 27, 2006, leaving behind a legacy of heroism and dedication.
