Development and Advanced Avionics

In the latter half of the 1990s, Cessna decided to create a high-performance business jet to fill a niche between the Citation Excel/XLS and the Citation X. This resulted in the Model 680, equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306C engines featuring a digital control system, a Honeywell Primus Epic avionics suite, a Rockwell-Collins FMZ2000 flight management system, and a glass cockpit.

The most important feature of the Model 680, from a marketing perspective, is its ability to operate from short runways. This was achieved through the use of a moderately swept wing with a relatively high aspect ratio.

Cabin Design and Comfort

The aircraft was unveiled to the public in 1998 at the National Business Aviation Association exhibition in Las Vegas. It is designed to carry 8 (in the standard variant) to 12 passengers, with two crew members. The pressurized, heated, and air-conditioned passenger cabin measures 7.38 m in length, 1.70 m in maximum width, and 1.73 m in maximum height. In its standard configuration, the cabin features four pairs of face-to-face seats, with a table between them.

Milestones and Deliveries

The Citation Sovereign, built primarily from light alloys, made its first flight on February 27, 2002. Its type certificate was obtained in June 2004, and customer deliveries commenced in September of the same year.
