To maintain the required level of combat capabilities for strategic military transport aviation, the modernization of 64 C-141B “Starlifter” military transport aircraft from the Air Force Reserve components was completed by 1999, prior to the cessation of new aircraft deliveries.
These aircraft, redesignated as C-141C, began entering service with units in 1997, with the first aircraft rolled out on October 31st of that year. This upgrade was vital for extending their operational lifespan and enhancing performance.
C-141C Technological Enhancements
The C-141C models feature an improved wing structure and are additionally equipped with a digital autopilot and an All Weather Flight Control System (AWFCS). They also integrate an enhanced Digital Fuel Quantity Indication System (FQIS), along with radiation and missile launch warning systems.
Furthermore, these aircraft include automatic dispensers for chaff and flares (ADS – Airlift Defensive System), a GPS Enhanced Navigation System (GPSENS) that corrects data from NAVSTAR GNSS, and colored 8-inch AMLCD multi-functional display units in the cockpit.
Special Operations Capabilities
A portion of the C-141B aircraft (approximately 30) underwent modernization under the SOLL (Special Operation Low Level) program. These particular aircraft are fitted with AN/AAR-17 forward-looking infrared (FLIR) stations, night vision systems, and head-up displays (HUD).
These enhancements enable them to perform low-altitude flights and precise cargo drops, complemented by an electronic warfare (EW) system. These specialized aircraft are specifically designated for missions in support of Air Force special operations forces.
