Early Life and Wartime Beginnings
Born in 1918 in the village of Ozeryanovka, Horlivka City Council, Donetsk region, Grigory Evdokimovich Boyko completed an incomplete secondary school before working at the S.M. Kirov Horlivka Machine-Building Plant. He joined the Red Army in 1938, demonstrating early commitment to military service, and graduated from the Voroshilovgrad School of Pilots in 1940, honing his skills as an aviator.
At the start of the war, he served in the Western Military District. In the very first raid, his unit tragically lost all its equipment, and personnel were withdrawn to the rear for regrouping. There, pilots like Boyko mastered the Pe-2 dive bomber, a crucial aircraft, and were subsequently sent to the challenging Northwestern Front, ready for renewed action.
Heroic Missions and Reconnaissance
Lieutenant Boyko made his first combat sortie of the war on August 20, 1941, an event that marked the beginning of his distinguished operational career. Despite his aircraft being severely damaged by anti-aircraft fire during this mission, the skilled pilot managed to execute an emergency landing, saving himself and potentially his crew.
In just over two months, Lieutenant Boyko completed an impressive 38 sorties, showcasing remarkable bravery and dedication. On October 27, 1941, he was deservedly awarded the prestigious Order of the Red Banner for his exceptional service and valor. With the commencement of the Demyansk operation, his role shifted as he was re-qualified as a reconnaissance pilot, undertaking approximately one hundred critical flights in this new, vital capacity.
A Legacy of Courage
On June 7, 1942, during another combat sortie, this time on a ground attack mission, Grigory Evdokimovich Boyko’s aircraft was tragically shot down. He paid the ultimate sacrifice, buried in the city of Staraya Russa, Novgorod region, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on July 21, 1942, Senior Lieutenant Boyko G.E., who had served as a flight commander of the 514th Dive Bomber Aviation Regiment, was posthumously awarded the esteemed title of Hero of the Soviet Union, recognizing his extraordinary heroism and sacrifice for his country.
