The BN-2 Defender is a reconnaissance aircraft developed by the English firm Pilatus Britten-Norman. It was based on the light multipurpose aircraft BN-2T Islander, designed for various roles.

Initial Deployment and Equipment

Several aircraft were created under the Defender program. The first five were designed for UK forces stationed in Northern Ireland in 1987 and delivered to the military in 1989. These aircraft were equipped with an AN/ALQ-144 jamming system, a Lockheed Martin IRCM reconnaissance suite, Zeiss 610, 80mm Zeiss Trilens 80, Zeiss RMK cameras, two KS-153, and a Vinten F143 panoramic camera.

Two more aircraft were supplied to the British Army in 1990. The first official display of the “Defender” took place in 1987, and a year later, the aircraft embarked on a promotional tour of Middle Eastern countries, considered the most likely customers.

Although it was reported that the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) purchased three “Defender” AWACS aircraft, various reference books on world air forces published in recent years do not confirm this information.

Technological Evolution and Adaptations

In 1991, trials of the “Defender” began with a different radar: a modernized AN/APG-66 radar from the F-16 fighter. The aircraft’s conversion took place in the USA, at the Westinghouse plant in Baltimore, and trials were conducted at the US Navy test center in Patuxent River. The Turkish Air Force has shown interest in acquiring four “Defenders” equipped with the F-16 radar.

In 2003, the British Army acquired four aircraft designated as Defender AL Mk1. During their operational life, the aircraft were modified, including an extended nose to accommodate a rotating turret for an optical or FLIR sensor. They were subsequently re-designated as Defender AL Mk 2.

Modern Versions and Advanced Capabilities

The latest version of the aircraft, developed by Britten-Norman, received the designation BN-2T-4S Defender 4000. These aircraft, equipped with two Rolls-Royce 250-17F/1 turboprop engines, can be used for installing various aerial reconnaissance and surveillance systems.
