Early Life and Military Training

Pavel Maksimovich Berestnev was born on June 2, 1913, in the village of Pokrovka, now in the Khislavichi district of the Smolensk region (Russia), into a peasant family. From 1933, he lived in Moscow, where he completed an incomplete secondary school and a rabfak, later working as a roofer.

In 1936, Berestnev joined the Red Army. He graduated from the Kachin Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1939 and, in 1940, completed advanced courses for Air Force navigators. This solid preparation led him to the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, which he joined in March 1942.

Combat Career and Aerial Feats

He began his combat operations in the skies of Sevastopol as part of the 45th Fighter Aviation Regiment. On June 12, 1942, his aircraft was shot down in an aerial battle, an incident he recovered from to continue his distinguished career.

By May 1943, Senior Lieutenant P. M. Berestnev, then Deputy Squadron Commander of the 45th Fighter Aviation Regiment (216th Mixed Aviation Division, 4th Air Army, North Caucasian Front), had completed 131 combat sorties. In aerial battles, he personally shot down 10 enemy aircraft and 2 in a group, solidifying his reputation as an aviation ace.

On May 24, 1943, for his bravery and valor shown in battles against the enemy, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Berestnev finished the war serving with the 100th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 9th Guards Fighter Aviation Division, credited with a total of 14 aerial victories (12 personal kills and 2 in a group; other sources state 11+2).

Post-War Service and Recognitions

After the war, Pavel Maksimovich Berestnev continued his service in the Air Force, graduating from the Military Air Academy in 1945. In 1961, Lieutenant General of Aviation P. M. Berestnev was transferred to the reserve, having dedicated a significant part of his life to the aerial defense of his nation.

He lived in the city of Ordzhonikidze (North Ossetian ASSR) and passed away on May 20, 1981. His numerous awards include the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner (four times), the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Order of the Red Star (three times), and various medals, testifying to his distinguished military career.
