In July 1945, engineer Vern Biasell proposed a sketch for a new light multi-purpose aircraft, the Bendix 52, to the management of Bendix Personal Airplane Div.’s aviation department. The project was approved, and by December of the same year, the first prototype (NX34103) was built. This was a two-seater, low-wing monoplane, equipped with a 100 hp Franklin 6AC engine with a tractor propeller.
Design Evolution and Prototypes
Following the successful testing of the prototype, it was decided to immediately test a prototype of the production machine, designated Bendix 55 (NX34110). This version mainly differed in its powerplant, a 100 hp Franklin 4A4-100-B10 engine, and a redesigned landing gear structure.
Successful Testing and Production Plans
Tests of this machine were also quite successful, after which it was decided to establish serial production on an automotive-type assembly line in Garland, Texas.
Unexpected Project Cancellation
However, in early 1946, Ernst Breech left Bendix and moved to Ford Motor Company as Vice President. The new Bendix management abandoned the idea of building aircraft, and the aviation department was closed.
