A significant step forward for Louis Blériot was the Blériot VII aircraft, a monoplane with a pulling propeller. This was followed by the fabric-covered Blériot VIII, which was later re-engineered into the Blériot VIIIbis and Blériot VIIIter models, featuring flap-type ailerons and wingtip ailerons, respectively.
The Blériot VIII’s Innovation
The small Blériot VIII machine was considered in France to embody aeronautical perfection. This was despite being held together by numerous clamps, wires, and turnbuckles, and the pilot’s seat being merely a wide strip of leather. During flight, the pilot literally choked on the exhaust pipe smoke from the engine.
Nevertheless, for its excellent flight performance for the time, the Aero Club of France awarded Blériot his pilot’s license for this design. This recognition highlighted the aircraft’s potential and its relative success in the early days of aviation.
A Historic Flight
On October 30, 1908, Louis Blériot completed a closed-circuit flight from one town to another, returning to the starting point, using the Blériot VIII bis aeroplane. The flight was accomplished in a single day, covering the 14-kilometer distance between Turin and Artenay.
Financial Challenges
It is important to note that by this time, due to frequent breakdowns and accidents, as well as the costs of building new, more advanced designs, L. Blériot’s expenses had reached a substantial sum of 780,000 francs. He was on the verge of financial ruin.
Although his last record-breaking flight brought him a certain degree of fame, it could not fundamentally alter the constructor’s financial situation. Despite his technical achievements, the economic viability of his projects remained a significant challenge.
