In October 1942, the Fairchild company received an order for the construction of two prototypes of the XBQ-3 unmanned attack aircraft. Its design was based on the AT-21 training aircraft, with the original structure remaining largely unchanged.

The primary modification involved the removal of the pilot’s and cadets’ seats, which were no longer needed for its intended function. This development marked a significant step in remotely operated aircraft technology.

Innovative Features

An interesting feature of the XBQ-3 was its equipment with a television camera. The image was transmitted to the screen of the operator in the controlling aircraft, allowing for precise remote guidance.

Although initially conceived as an attack drone, a piloted variant was later considered for testing. As a payload, the XBQ-3 was designed to carry 1800 kg of explosives, making it a powerful weapon.

Trials and Project Cancellation

The first flight of the XBQ-3 took place in July 1944. Due to its cigar-shaped fuselage, the aircraft received the unofficial name of “flying torpedo.” Testing was generally successful.

However, despite the positive results, the XBQ-3 no longer held the same interest for the military. The process of refining the control system took approximately one and a half years.

This delay ultimately led the United States Air Force (USAF) to abandon the XBQ-3 development program. The USAF decided to concentrate on the advancement of missile technology, marking the end of this innovative project.
