Alexander Afanasyevich Bondar was born in 1916 in the village of Bulavinovka, Novopskov district, Luhansk region.
Early Life and Military Service
He began his wartime service with the 59th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment near Moscow. During the battles for Stalingrad, he carried out 112 combat missions.
Combat Exploits
By early 1943, across 241 combat sorties, he had destroyed up to 70 tanks, 250 vehicles, blown up six ammunition trains, suppressed seven artillery batteries, destroyed two crossings, and annihilated approximately 2000 Nazis. In addition, in air battles, he shot down 4 enemy aircraft.
Sacrifice and Recognition
He was killed on October 28, 1943, during the crossing of the Dnieper. He is buried in the village of Yuryevka, Chernihiv region. He was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, two Orders of the Red Banner, and the Order of Alexander Nevsky.
