Early Luftwaffe Career and Jet Transition

On May 15, 1944, Bley was assigned to the newly forming Erprobungskommando 262, where he commenced retraining on the innovative Me 262 jet fighter. On September 26, Erprobungskommando 262 was disbanded, and Kommando Nowotny was created from its remnants, with Bley becoming Staffelkapitän in 2./Kdo Nowotny. This marked a crucial step into the era of jet aviation.

His first combat participation with the Me 262 occurred on October 7, 1944, during a defense against USAAF B-24 raids. In this same engagement, his aircraft was shot down, but Bley successfully parachuted from his disintegrating Me 262 A-1a (W.Nr. 170 307). According to American records, the victory was credited to Lieutenant Urban Drew.

Pioneering Jet Combat and Victories

On October 10, Paul Bley achieved his first victory in a jet fighter, shooting down a USAAF P-51. However, just two days later, he was forced to make an emergency landing in his Me 262 A-1a (W.Nr. 110 388) due to fuel exhaustion. These incidents highlighted both the potential and the challenges of the new technology.

The Tragic End of Paul Bley

On October 28, 1944, while landing at the airfield, the fuel system of his Me 262 A-1a (W.Nr. 110 388) failed catastrophically. The aircraft struck the ground and exploded, claiming Bley’s life. At the time of his death, Paul Bley had accumulated a total of 7 aerial victories.
