Bleriot XLV

Posted on October 4, 2026 By

Developed concurrently with the Bleriot XLIV, the Bleriot XLV was completed in early 1914. This aircraft was designed as a reconnaissance and observation platform, capable of also serving as an artillery spotter. It was a single-seat monoplane with a mixed construction, powered by an 80 hp Gnome 7A engine.

Innovative Design

The main distinction from the Bleriot XLIV lay in the XLV’s unique layout. The engine and fuel tank were centrally located within the fuselage, while the pilot’s cockpit was moved forward into the nose section. This alternative configuration significantly improved the pilot’s visibility compared to the standard Bleriot XI.

Limited Impact

However, the Bleriot XLV met the same fate as its predecessor, the Bleriot 44. Military forces showed no interest in the reconnaissance aircraft, and as a result, only a single prototype was ever built.
